What is a duathlon?
A duathlon is a multi-sport event comprised of a run, a bike ride, and another run. Participants complete each of these events consecutively. Bikes are racked in a special transition area during the run portion of the event.
Do I need a special bike?
No you do not! In fact, many people, especially those who are new to multi-sport events, ride whatever bike they have. If your bike has two wheels and you can pedal it and brake safely, that’s all you need!
How do I make sure that my bike is safe to ride?
Make sure that your tires are pumped, and securely attached (give them a spin to make sure they don’t wobble!). Test your brakes. Make sure that your chain is lubed and that you can switch gears properly. If you have any problems, we have bike mechanics on site to make sure you’re good to go!
Do I need to wear a helmet on the race course?
Yes, in accordance with sanctioning and safety standards of Triathlon Manitoba, helmets are required on all portions of the bike course. You must put your helmet on before taking your bike off the transition bike rack, and you may not take it off until your bike is re-racked, after the bike ride portion of the event. You don’t need to wear your helmet during the run!
What if I get a flat tire or have another bike mechanical problem?
We have full mechanical support for your bike at the race site, available at the transition area. Rest assured that our trusted bike experts can solve any of your last minute bike issues!
Can I bring my babyjogger and/or chariot? What about a bike with training wheels?
For safety reasons, we cannot allow baby joggers and bike chariots on the course. Bikes with training wheels are permitted (kudos to those young participants!); however, we do encourage those with training wheels to participate in the short distance event.
Can I race with headphones?
For safety reasons and in accordance with sanctioning guidelines of Triathlon Manitoba, headphones, ipods, mp3 players etc., are forbidden on the race course.
Can our family/children participate as a relay team?
We are not offering a relay option for this event at this time. But remember, this event is all about family participation. You are welcome and encouraged to ride and run the race together. It’s a great way to share the fun!
How do I choose between the short and medium distance options? Can I switch distances mid-way through the race?
Based on guidelines provided by Triathlon Manitoba, we recommend that athletes under the age of eight opt for the shorter-distance course. If younger athletes would like to try the longer distance, we strongly encourage a parent to accompany them during the race. Participants cannot switch distances once they have started the race.
Is there a time limit?
There is no time limit for this event.
What should I wear?
Wear something that will keep you comfortable for both the bike and run portions of the event, and remember to dress for the weather. If it’s warm out, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt is a good option. If its cooler, avoid loose pants as these could get tangled in your bike chain. You may want to pack a change of clothes for after the event. And definitely remember your running shoes!!
Where do I park and are there washrooms on site?
Parking is available at the main parking lot, adjacent to the pavilion. From there, you can easily walk or bike over to the Rainbow Stage parking lot. There are restrooms located in the park pavilion. We also have port-a-potties at the transition zone.
What do I do when I get there?
Head over to the Rainbow Stage parking lot. There, you will find a race registration booth. Check-in there to pick up your race number. Rack your bike and your helmet on the provided bike racks, and enjoy the excitement of the pre-race atmosphere. Don’t forget to check out the draw prizes generously donated by Alter Ego. There will be a pre-race meeting in the transition zone, occurring at 8:45. This will review all the rules and directions for the event.
What happens to my bike while I run?
There is a special transition zone for all bikes during the race. You will be given space to rack your bike and helmet, and store your belongings. The transition zone is set up so that you can move between the run and bike portions of the race easily, quickly, and safely. For safety reasons, only registered athletes may enter the transition zone.
I loved my duathlon experience! What are some other ways I can get involved?
The Kids of Steel (KOS) program offers a series of triathlon (swim/bike/run) races for children ages five and up. For adults, there are several “try-a-tri” and “try-a-du” races occurring throughout the summer. Check out the Triathlon Manitoba website, www.triathlon.mb.ca for full information on these events, and ways to get involved!
